Acupuncture is one of the oldest, most commonly practiced systems of medicine in the world, originating in China some 3,500 years ago. All you need to understand acupuncture is that everything is energy – you have obvious forms of it in electricity that powers your house, but also trees are energy, food is energy, even tables and chairs (if you could look at one under a high powered microscope) are just energy! Modern science, in fields like quantum physics, are proving this more and more all the time. Various cultures talk about it using different words – Ki (Japanese/Korean), Prana (Hindu), Kaa (Egyptian), Vis (Naturopathic). In Chinese culture, it is called “Qi” (pronounced Chee).
In the human body, this energy is conducted through a distribution network of energetic highways called meridians. What are commonly referred to as acupuncture points are precise locations along a meridian where our Qi can be accessed through various means to affect our body, mind, and spirit.
Whether you have allergies, headaches, chronic pain, constipation, fatigue, diabetes, high blood pressure, or anxiety… it does not matter. Sounds strange, right? But what we think of as symptoms or “dis-ease” are simply a consequence of an imbalance on this very fundamental energetic level. Acupuncture seeks to correct these imbalances and restore health to the individual. This is true holistic medicine.
